Why This Exists
This grant exists because of a dog named Winnie.
She was one of Ava's puppies — raised by us from birth, cared for with intention, and placed with what we believed was a vetted rescue. She deserved better than what the system gave her.
Her death wasn't random. It was the direct outcome of urgency over alignment, good intentions without structure, and a placement system that failed her at every step.
Winnie's Legacy Grant was built from that loss.
Winnie's Story
What happened — and what it means.
The Situation
Winnie, her brother Cowboy, and their mother Ava had just been retrieved from a rescue we believed was reputable and aligned. We were wrong.
When they came back to us, there was nowhere appropriate for them to go. No foster homes were available. No adopters could be found.
For weeks, they stayed boarded on a friend's property while I made multiple trips there every day — feeding them, exercising them, providing enrichment, maintaining stability, and doing everything I could to keep them safe while searching for the right placement.
Then a small local rescue offered to help. We were assured their foster network was fully vetted.
What Happened
I was told the dogs would remain in one place for five days to decompress and be properly assessed before any decisions were made.
Less than 24 hours later, Winnie and Cowboy were moved.
They were placed together — into a home that had not been vetted — based on a friendly recommendation, not a behaviorally informed decision. It happened without my knowledge or consent.
It was a well-intentioned choice made without the structure, behavioral literacy, or oversight required to make it responsibly.
The Outcome
Two weeks later, a door was left open.
Winnie and Cowboy got out.
Fifteen minutes later, Winnie was hit by a car and died on impact.
She was still microchipped to me. That's how I got the call.
The Lesson
This wasn't an accident.
It was the outcome of a system that prioritizes urgency over alignment, emotion over understanding, and placement over responsibility.
Love and good intentions are not enough. Structure matters. Behavioral literacy matters. Accountability matters.
Willingness is not the same as readiness.

Winnie's death didn't just hurt. It clarified everything. It revealed the gaps in the system — gaps that aren't the exception. They're the norm.
Dogs who have been displaced, stressed, or traumatized don't just need somewhere to go. They need the right environment, led by someone who truly understands what they're taking on.
